Portrait or Personal Image - Steven Petrides

I first became interested in photography at age nine when my dad gave me a Kodak Instamatic 100 camera for my birthday. It was my first camera ever. Little did I know during that moment that this simple little camera with drop-in film cartridges and pop-in flash bulbs would foster a passion that would remain with me my entire life.

I love the outdoors and I love nature. Have you ever witnessed the sun burning through an early morning fog; listened to the flute-like call of a wood thrush echoing through the woods; or spooked a doe and her fawn while hiking? This is what nature photography is all about. It is also vitally important to me to implement a “low-impact, non-manipulate” approach. No photograph is more important than the safety or welfare of the subject.

I seek out clean lines, form, and balance in each image conveying not what I was photographing but why I was photographing. On occasion, I enjoy pushing the envelope to eliminate all visual clues as to what the subject is and invite the viewer not just to see the image but to journey through it. On other occasions, I find it simply awe-inspiring to be at a world class location with dramatic light. Photographs come easily in these instances.
